I have determined that jetlag is not my friend. Not that it is anyone's friend, but it makes me unable to string together cohesive sentences, so everyone I meet must think that I am a complete moron.
So far, the only thing that helps is to start intentionally shifting my schedule before I leave and to just do my best to stay awake the entire day that I arrive. So that's where I am hoping that you can help me out. What are some good activities/walks in Christchurch that will help keep me awake? I'll be staying close to the Arts Center.

Crater Rim Track is great. If you're semi-lazy like me you'll take the 28 (Lyttleton) bus to the bottom Gondola terminal, catch the Gondola up and walk towards Godley Head, following the Lyttleton signs appropriately when they occur, visit a nice pub for a beer.... Sorry you want to stay awake... have a coffee and catch the bus back.
Alternatively there are some good walks from Sumner towards Taylors Mistake.

a punt on the river is what they do at cambridge and oxford - you know, get in a little boat, and propel it using a pole, which you push off against the riverbed. or, you could just row, or get in a paddleboat. at the botanical gardens, they rent these little boats. it's fun. and will keep you awake!

#3 is being really energetic - you could also take the 28 bus (from behind the Casino) and the Gondola top the top of the Port Hills and then walk downhill on the historic Bridle Path either south to Lyttleton or north back to where you began.
The Botanic Gardens are definitely worth a walk. You could also take a guided walk from near the Cathedral (10am & 2 pm from memory).

walking and cycling - and punting - is the right idea.
The more exposure you get to fresh air and sunlight the quicker you will adjust.
I also find that drinking loads of water and eating plenty fruit and veg and nothing heavier than fish for the first few days helps
try not to fall asleep mid-afternoon no matter how much you want to - plan some outdoor activities at that time for the first week
coherence returns after about ten days
