Hi, I will be in NZ in October, starting off in Christchurch and spending a couple of weeks exploring the South Island before heading to Wellington and Auckland (where we fly home).
I am looking for an amazing place to stay for a coupld of nights. I don't want to have to mortgage my house to stay there, but am willing to pay around $200 per night. I want spectacular views of water and mountains and hopefully an open fire and bath - you know somewhere we can lay about, drink red wine, eat good food, listen to great music and just stare out the window completely amazed at what a beautiful place this world is.
I know places like this exist because I have seen the photo's, its just that every time I look at a website they are about $1000 per night which is just rediculous. Seriously, I don't need 5 star, just a special place to spend a few days.
Would love to hear your stories about the 'special' places you have stayed.

Wow, you don't want much do you - and all for NZ$200 p/night (presumably for a couple)!
I don't have any personal experience of any such places in Wellington, but I remember years ago some friends stayed at the Island Bay lighthouse which has been converted into a B&B - apparently it was very romantic. Further details here: http://www.bnb.co.nz/results/listing_details.html?lid=1002
Kaikoura YHA - about $30/night! I don't know what it is like these days (I stayed there about 10 years ago), but my memory is of an amazing full length window overlooking the water and the snow capped mountains beyond. It was incredible!
