Greetings all,

and I'm finally heading to New Zealand. It's been a long time coming, and I'm looking forward to it.

I haven't made any plans yet for when I'm actually there, so am wondering if some of you can add any input, as appropriate.

The general idea is to head there at the beginning of April and stay on the North Island for a month. I only plan on visiting one island right now, and want to leave the South Island for another time. I assume that the North Island is slightly warmer in April??

I plan on getting around using a mixture of modes, I'll probably rent a car at some point, and probably hitch at other points, and use public transport (no flying) the rest of the time. As a general rule, I prefer to take each day as it comes. I hate restrictions on me.

What I'm trying to work out is if there's any significant financial benefit to buying some things in advance, like the car rental and coach fares (like some sort of island wide pass). I realise that most of the time, there is always local information available that may not have a web presence, like local car rental firms, etc. Or there might be local firms that do have a web presence, but that presence comes way down in Google searches.

I plan on staying in hostels and campsites (and perhaps an overnight coach if such a thing exists).

Many thanks,

Peter

No, I don't think you need to pay for anything before you arrive.

You may wonder about bookings for the Easter holiday period. Again, don't worry. In 2011, I toured the part of NZ north of Auckland pretty intensively. The weather that year was excellent. The only place I found to be booked out for Easter was the Top Ten caravan and camping park at Whatuwhiwhi. Motels at Paihia were cutting prices.

There are no overnight coaches that I know of. Even the overnight train & ferry have stopped running because why come to see NZ & then travel at night?
Generally it is cheaper to get a rental car for longer, book it ahead & return it to the same city.

Good on you. NZ is easy to travel in. There is nothing to be gained by prebuying anything. You are better off taking NZ day by day. What you gain by staying uncommitted will far out way tying yourself to prebuying.
