Going to NZ in August, starting off in Christchurch and just want to book a place to stay for the first night. A friend of mine has recommended Stonehurst for a 1 bed tourist flat but she said there could be somewhere as nice that is nearer to places to eat etc. She thought it was about a 10 min walk from the town/city centre? I think rolleston house was recommended in a previous thread but when trying to book online they keep putting me in a dorm separate from my boyfriend and we would like a private room.
Any recommendations? We will be after a 24 hr flight so I doubt we'll be up for much partying that night, just somewhere nice to crash with somewhere to eat/ drink nearby...

We booked Rolleston House for December without drama, and I just checked the site for 15 August, and a double room was okay. Stonehurst is a bit of a hike to town. Cant find the name of one we used with double rooms and HUGE ensuite bedrooms right in town, maybe its been renamed. However, suggest you check out BBH organisation for hostels. www.bbh.co.nz

It doesn't have quite the same character, but if all you want is a quiet clean place to sleep and can't get into Rolleston House, Christchurch Central YHA is well located. Another in the vicinity which looks good (although I've yet to stay there) is the Coachman.
