Hey All,

So I'm half-planning a trip to NZ in July/August. It was meant to be a two week road trip with my boyfriend around both islands including some skiing in the South Island. Now, we are possibly both too poor, but as my working holiday in Australia is nearly finished, I really want to make it NZ before I head far, far away. I'm wondering if it's easy to do maybe just the South Island on the cheap for skiing and sightseeing for a week to 10 days, including car rentals.

Or is it not worth it because it will be too cold to enjoy any of the nature and hikes? We are outdoorsy people and love to spend a lot of time outside, but not freezing outside.

Any itineraries or suggestions would be helpful. If you don't think it's doable based on finances and time of year, I'd rather wait until I can do NZ properly.

Thank you!

Hmmm... well, it will be hard to get a ski season in NZ in without having it be cold. If you want to go for skiing and can afford it, go. If not, don't go.

Personally (not a huge skier - grew up in the Rockies and a bit of a snob about skiing elsewhere), I'd save NZ until you can go in warmer weather and longer daylight.

Hope that helps!

You need to define what is "cheap" to you. Skiing is not a cheap sport, but if that is what you want to do google the prices of a day pass & gear hire etc at Coronet Peak, Remarkables, Cardona or Treble Cone etc on NZski.
