Thanks so much. Just to clarify for others, the rates above (616 and 1680) are for a 14 day rental. I will plan on the camper van without shower/toilet and do more research on the campgrounds. Worse comes to worse, I can always go stay in a local hostel or b&b :) In Auckland, Jucy hotel single room is $49 per night so I think for 13 nights, I should be able to get by for $700-800 or so, thus saving money which can be used for the ferry crossing. Thank you my friend for your timely and quick advice.

As an example, you can get a powered campsite at Taupo for $26 a night. Use [this|https://www.google.co.nz/#q=campground+fees+new+zealand] and also [this|http://www.doc.govt.nz] to help. You'll still meet plenty of other ravellers as you go along.
Theres also a camp ground a short distance from the airport. $48 a night but getting near top end. Even somewhere as touristy as Rotorua is only $50 a night in a camp ground.

Wow - you have pointed out another treasure. That will help bring my cost down significantly and also let me be closer to nature! Now, only if you can give me the skills needed to drive on left side of the road (I am coming from US)!!

Make a green arrow and stick it somewhere on the dash board or middle of steering wheel pointing left. Not red as it means no. And its green for go. But I think some rental companies do provide something similar.
He means kerb your passengers.
Sorry, bit late with that one, but I'm pleased to note you've got the drift.

An arrow in the middle of steering wheel pointing left? What happens when you go round a corner and the arrow is spinning in circles? You'd get seasick!
Drive with your passengers in the gutter. Can't go wrong.
