Hello, Our itinerary is now at a fine tuning stage, and I have a bit of a query.

We will leave Mt Maunganui earlyish morning, and head straight to Matamata, we are on the 11am tour from Shires Rest Cafe, and expect to arrive in Rotarua circa 3pm. We will likely head straight to Polynesian Spa, then spend the evening either up the Gondola, or at the basement cinema, depending on how we feel.

The next day I have a horse ride booked in, then will likely spend the rest of the day at Te Puia (how long is needed here)?

My question is do we then head for Taupo late afternoon and have a night there, or do we spend the second evening in Rotarua, and just visit Taupo on the way to Napier the following day.

We don't need to arrive in Napier until dusk, so could have the best part of a day in Taupo.

We are in a campervan, and I cannot find a campsite walking distance to Taupo, which has driven my query.

I know it is rushed, but it is the time we have and so have to make compromises.

What are your must do's for Taupo? Just to add that my mobility is limited after hip surgery, and so can only walk about 1km at a time (frustrating but got to make do).

Thanks in advance

Not much to see in Taupo itself, though it kind of works because it's on the way from Rotorua to Napier.
Also, I'd punt for Wai-o-tapu as a better thermal park than Te Puia, and it's on the way from Rotorua to Taupo.
But Te Puia does have the added benefit of being a Maori cultural attraction.
The hot water pools and slides in Taupo are worth a stop.

Hello thanks for your reply, thats why we picked Te Puia, as it did both for us and we are on a limited timeframe. We will go past Wai-o-tapu, but rerally don't fancy one of the evening Maori villages with the food included etc. I find these things can be quite average and overpriced
