Hi. I am travelling around SE for a year and I was in Australia for a month. I am awed by the the phase of working life and the balance of nature and city in this country. I would like to experience traveling and working there for 12months.

I am a graphic designer, currently taking the path of a freelancer. I am planning to gain some experience from people in this industry too if this opportunity arises. I am hoping to apply for a work holiday visa or a a temporary working visa to support my interest in work and travel. But I found out this will not be applicable as I am a citizen of Singapore.

I don't mind taking on short work opportunities (3-6 months) too. Are there other ways I can make this happen? Are there visas that I can take on as temporary work traveller?

Your kind advice is greatly appreciated. (:
I am determine to take a break next year and really hoping to be doing it in Australia.
Thank you.

where did you read / get advice that Singaporeans cannot get short-work visas for Oz? I've met a few SIngaporeans working here on Temporary Work (Short Stay Activity) visa, which is the type of visa you are talking about.

Oh that's good to know. I tried the online application from www.border.gov.au/trav/work/work it's a test to see if I can apply for the temporary work visa and it state that I am not eligible to apply. I tried to apply as a graphic designer though.

Do you know what it is the procedure they took? I am happy to get into any range of job if need be (eg. barista, retail, farming, design intern)
Or is it only applicable if I already secure a job in Oz?

One of the criteria for Short Stay Activity visa is highly specialized work so is this what graphic design is?

As a Singaporean Citizen, if that is your true nationality, you are not eligible for the Australian Working Holiday Visa or the Working & Holiday Visa.
Your only real chances of work, would be a sponsorship by an Australian company, or a foreign company with a base or an office in Australia.

Do you already have a degree?
Or do you have the funds to pay for a pre degree (to uni-ie attend senior college), degree/post grad etc, that is one of the ways to do it.
Not cheap.
But if you do get a students visa for say 24 months in graphic design, you can work for any employer, or an employer in your chosen field, 20 hours a week, no limit long holidays.
This does see you spend more than you will likely make, but will give you a life in Australia long term, 12/24/36 months.
Chase up studying if you are really keen.
NOTE: lucky you were not caught "freelancing" during your last stay. Au ETA/VV/TV does not give work rights.

Yes, I am originally and still a resident of Singapore.
I wasn't working or freelancing with any Australian companies while I was traveling there. (:

A sponsorship from a company in Australia is almost unlikely as the competition is fierce in this field as there are heaps of talented designers in Oz (which is great. which is also why I want to achieve that experience).

I have to complete at least 2 years of study in order to eventually attain a temporary visa.
Honestly I don't have the fund to enrol in a 2 year study. Although upgrading my education is ideal.
Thank you for your input.

Well.. I guess this is a rather disappointing facts :x

Hi aussieguarddog43 - I've not heard of a blanket ban on Singaporeans? I cannot see such mentioned on our Dept Immigration website, in fact the website lists SIngapore as one of the 'eligible passport holders'. So I'm curious where you see a blanket ban on Singaporeans? I think in the case of thatsopilsist the issue is that graphic artists are not a highly specialised field, there are a lot of graphic artists in Oz, a lot unemployed.

Hi as per my post to aussieguarddog43 I believe the issue is not that you are Singaporean, the issue is there is no demand for graphic artists as far as Oz Immigration is concerned, it is not considered a highly-specialised job that there is a shortage of in Oz. Do you have any other trade/qualifications/experience than graphic arts? Do you speak a second language (other than English) fluently as you may be able to apply as a language teacher. - Look at the website "http://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Visa-1" this lists different types of visas, bit over-whelming with the info at times but may help.
