hi everyone,

ive found a lot of difficulty (along with many other travelers ive met) in finding a decent paid job. Ive looked through quite a bit. im now interested in going back to farm work. However im interested only in full time work. I really need to make money. Ive heard a lot of talk, but havnt seem much myself.

Does anyone know where there are good farms that really give you 40 hour weeks and dont tell you there's work just to fill their hostels?? Im in airlie at the moment. Ive been to bundaberg, and proserpine. Both failed. Ive heard about Ayr. Anyone have any facts? where is the best place to be this time of season?
I dont have a car but im willing to travel and settle down a couple months for work.
Thanks a lot for your help..
James
p.s. The harvest hotline has'nt helped at all.....im looking for word from experience

The reality is that you almost certainly have to get away from the coastal resort towns and cities to find good honest jobs (ie, outside of hospitality, hostels, and some "fruit-picking schemes" tied to particular hostels). Ayr and Bowen, and maybe Ingham and even Tully, do have agricultural industries that are pretty extensive, so you could try further north of Airlie Beach, as you're contemplating. By the "harvest hotline" do you mean the government site - Harvest Trail? And have you tried Centrelink and the other JobCentre recruitment agencies?

Thanks for the response. Yes, i do mean the harvest trail. I dont believe they're entirly a failure, but they sent me places where i ended up paying to work. I have not tried centrelink but i have tried tons of time seek.com.au. career.com.au (or someything like that). The problem is that all the jobs ask experience. even if your supposed to be cleaning toiletts. However i immagine that away form the coast would be best. but id like to try cleaning on the islands. so far no luck. I just found an add for west bowen. they say you work 6-7 days a week. 150 accomadation plus 7 per day for transport.......so around 200 per week plus food. the thing is that EVERYONE HAS TOLD ME THAT. But ive never worked a single 40 hour week. so i dont know weather to try or not. However ill go try ayr probably if all else fails here in airlie. thanks again for the advice..

Well good luck James. It's way outside my experience so I cannot offer first-hand experience. However as you get a bit further north (Bowen etc) there are some hard-core agricutlrual areas right through the region (because of the climate they have very long growing seasons). I have looked at the Harvest Trail site as well and it seems more general information (names and places) rather than the specific information you need such as nature of the work, hours per fortnight, and so on. There is a fishing and prawning industry out of Townsville and Cairns - if you don't mind the sea there might be deckie work available. Whatever you do I hope it works out for you.
