So I am leaving Albany WA in my car and intending to make for Lismore NSW, I am planning to take the road trough Broken Hill, However have been warned it's not entirely safe, not sure what that means. I shall have CB radio, Be good to see what experiences ar out there

I've been driving this wide brown land for more years than I care to remember and only last October drove from Perth through Broken Hill to Brisbane. I have no idea what "not entirely safe" means. As Westwood says, I too don't drive at night because of the camels, roo's, horses, goats, wombats, cattle, emu's, etc. Last October the land either side of Broken Hill was as dry as a dead dingo's donger, but I believe they've had rain since. Unless you're sleeping in your car, you find yourself doing a couple of long days to get to Motels. Once past Balladonia, its a long day to Ceduna (1011km), about 5km w of Ceduna is the SA fruit inspection place, nothing allowed in. I hit a galah, smashing a headlight just out of Narrabri. The road is good, enough traffic that if you break down, you will not be stuck. Enjoy the trip.

The white cockatoo we hit slathered itself all over the front windscreen without breaking anything fortunately. We slept in our car for 7 nights so you can imagine the him. Smells like a dead sheep's shearing shed.

There are roadhouses with either cabins or tent sites (at Eucla, for instance).
There's no requirement to drive over a thousand kilometres with no services. Although I actually think a basic tent, sleeping mat, and sleeping bag, would be a good cheap investment for your trip.
How long are you giving yourself for this, and what time of year?
The unsafe part from my perspective is driving at night as mentioned by many above: and potential for falling asleep at the wheel if you are doing this on your own. It's a bit of a trap when you start to get sick of the journey and decide to put a few more K's in before you knock off for a rest. I always carry a tent (mentioned by Coalcliff) and some basic food stuff and plenty of water. That way you can have some shelter if you get stuck between motels.
Don't ignore the basic's...simple as that. You should be OK. Whatever you do don't hit a Wombat...like hitting a speed bump in the middle of nowhere!! The smell hangs around under the car forever!!
Have a safe and enjoyable trip . Take it easy

Thanks folks that's great, I shall be driving an old beetle, 1968, which is fully serviced, with new tyres an all! I have a tent and sleeping bag , will be taking food and water. I plan to leave next week and take my time about it. I have been told to drive between about 0700 and 1600. I have a canteen for petrol 5 litre and will get one for water, if I 'm honest its running out of petrol i'm most concerned about
Here is a useful resource:
https://www.exploroz.com/Forum/Topic/117422/Nullarbor_fuel_price_update.aspx
It lists where fuel is available right across (and the prices). Have a great trip (I remember my 1967 Beetle fondly).

Fuel is no problem, probably available every 300km or at the most, the price is something else though. There are places which give you a great view of the southern coastline, indeed, step over the very small single railing and you can walk to the very edge of the country. The actual Nullabor Plain is only about 150km or so and have a look at the Old Telegraph Station at Eucla. The worse thing about the trip is the crappy Road House food, I take a bag of oranges with me, eat them before Ceduna or they'll confiscated.
