Does anyone know how difficult it is to get desired dates for doing the Overland Track during the month of October? You can't request booking for the track until July 1, and we wanted to go ahead and book flights earlier. We would hate to have flights into Tasmania and nowhere to go.
Any recommendations for the other ten days or so we hope to be in Tasmania.

Well if you book as soon as you can you should be fine. It looks like everyone wants to start the walk on a weekend though, as mid week starts are not booked as much, so have some flexibilty on your flights and allow some time to see the rest of Tassie and you'll be fine. Worst case is, there is plenty of other things to see and do in Tassie and plenty of other great walks as well.
If you can't get a slot you could Walk through the Walls of Jerusalem and down through the Never Never to connect with the Overland at Windy Ridge which gives you one and a bit days of walking on the Overland so you get a taste for it (as well as some of the most spectacular scenery in Tassie) and you don't need an Overland Track permit in this case. Be sure though to have some evidence of coming via the Walls such as photos as the rangers may well ask you for it.
Thanks iolanthe. All these seem like great choices. Done quite a few of the tracks in NZ, and these all sound equal. We'll keep the Walls of Jerusalem in mind.
There is also the more expensive and newer three capes walk as well, but I think its $500 however includes a lodge each of the three nights.

Heaps to do in Hobart and don't miss the glorious Salamanca Market on Saturdays, with lovely walks around Battery Point seeing all the renovated whaler's cottages (prime real estate now). It's easy to walk around the place, just be aware how changeable the weather can be (at any time of year!). Lots of gourmet food available and wonderful scenery.
Three Capes walk is very good, there are some tent camping spots (6) apparently. I went the lodge option over Easter.
