I need some help with accommodation in Sydney. I done several websearchs but seem to be stuck with places way out of my price range or which involve backpackers dorms - something I don't really want to do.
Has anyone out there every come across things like B+Bs in the Sydney area that are clean and safe and don't cost more than US$40 per night ideally but can stretch the budegt to US$50? Obviously I am looking for character and convienence to the centre but don't mind a few days of commuting if I can get somewhere decent to sleep, shower and make coffee.
Thanks

You will find it hard to secure a private room for $A50-60 in Sydney. Have you considered single rooms at hostels - could be a good compromise. Here is the Sydney Wotif page - if you scroll right to the bottom, a number of places are listed around the $A60-100 range.
Are there any genuine old pubs with accomodation above, with candlewick bedspreads and sagging beds, or have they all been done up to provide "charming period accomodation" or knocked down?
myshkin, The Palisade is a genuine old pub, but the accommodation is a bit better than sagging beds.

You will need to spend a lot more to be comfortable my friend! Sydney YHA Dorms are big and much cheaper / better value
