We're hoping to find a station stay in northern NSW or Qld that caters for independent travellers rather than large touristy groups. Looking to camp or stay in shearers quarters or similar.
Has anyone been to such a place?
Thanks!

Do you mean western Queensland? If so, my sister used to work on a property out past Quilpie that offered accommodation. The property the family live on is 'Boran' but the actual homestead they rent out is called something else which I can't remember. The company name is Truss Grazing so maybe google that and see if you can contact them? Failing that you can always try the local council/tourism group in Quilpie or other western Qld towns to see what they have on offer? Good luck.

I stayed on a farm not so long ago outside Mudgee (NSW inland). It was great - we were in a small cottage out the back. It was a working farm, all very genuine, and I spent a lot of time in country Australia when I was a kid so it was all very recognisable. No organised activities, no fancy stuff, just the occasional offer to go out on the tractor if we wanted to. We went yabbying (ask about that if you're an overseas visitor), wandered around the farm(make sure you close the gates), etc.
I think we found that one by ringing the Visitors Information Office in the nearest town, they should be able to give you a list and will prtobably give you some tips on the farm that will suit you best. The Vistors Info Centre will be locals too, so they'll probably know the real deal. All farmers will be keen to see you as they are doing it tough with the drought.
You might want to go inland to find the larger stations, sounds like thats what you're after. Frams on the coast are smaller, but generally closer to towns. Farm stay in NSWFarm stay in Queensland AustraliaFarm stay in NSW Australia
Here's another : Outback Beds
A couple of years ago we spend 3 days camped on the Darling at Kalara Station near Tilpa. However, I did not use Outback Beds to find them - just a coincidence. We loved the darling Darling, and the dawn chorus was glorious.
