Just visiting Tibet without a vehicle is expensive enough. And there are no ways of cutting costs except to join with others. And don't forget China closes Tibet at certain times of the year to foreign tourists.
The visa you get for China in Nepal will only be for at most 21-25 days and cannot be extended or amended. You will need to exit China within this time frame. Any other Chinese visa in your pasort will be cancelled and you issued with the group visa.

Thanks for the additional info. I am going to try and find a group to attach myself to. Didn't know the time limit on a visa (have visited twice before) but then again I hope to be long gone before day 20 comes up.

It's a shame that you will be in Sydney in July, which is the dim dark depths of winter. It also won't be the best time to do the trip up to Brisbane, however you need to decide what your priorities are and make sure that you visit your highlights at the best time. Enjoy your trip/
I'd highly recommend if you can get there to visit Kygyzstan and Uzbekistan.
As for Australia. Your other option is to go Cairns to Alice then back up to the Kakadu and Darwin in the NT and do northern Australia and head back down the west coast. There would be a day of driving retracing steps, plus a few more days driving back up to Darwin from the south to ship the vehicle (Could take it slow to see Coober Pedy and the Flinders Ranges, then Alice to Darwin is an easy 2 day drive.
But this would be better than trying to see the stuff around Darwin in the wet season or the build up to it.

OK, that makes more sense. And I'm now officially envious. Sounds like an epic trip. Are you going to keep a blog? If so, I'd be really interested to read it.
