I am planning to leave mid to late April and travel until July, and do a road trip up the East coast, hopefully going all the way up to Cainnes, and then over to Darwin. I am a solo Canadian traveller on a motorcycle. I don't have any real itinerary, as I am pretty much excited just to get on the road and see where it takes me. I am interested in meeting other people in a vehicle- motorcycle or car, to join with and explore the country, camping out along the way. I figure it would be safer to travel with companions, not to mention more entertaining with good company. I have already had some great trips with other travellers down the great ocean road, and figure to continue the trend. Anybody up for it?
Cairns by the way. From Sydney to Cairns there will be no shortage of people doing the same as you, and major destinations (plus hostels or camping grounds) are fairly frequent - in fact a lot of the coast is quite urban. In Cairns however you might want to find some companion vehicles for the trip to Darwin - it is long and fairly empty - and you can go a couple of ways, ranigng from bitumen all the way (via Tennant Creek 3 Ways) or more cross country (gravel and dirt) via Cape Crawford and the Heartbreak Hotel. If that appeals, then see www.exploroz.com.au - lots of detail on driving remote and regional places. Have fun.

oops, I noticed after I posted it. Thats what happens when you type while tired.
Thanks for the info though. I definately do not want to be stuck in the outback alone!
If you stick to the highway Cairns to Darwin via Tennant Ck you won't be alone, particularly at that time of year. Camping grounds at fairly regular intervals. The Barkly Homestead just over the NT border is a nice experience.
