Anyone been recently?
Is it still nice? (I haven't been there for 15 years)
Accomodation recommendations?
Alternatives?
Trying to organise 5 days at the end of April for The Vikings birthday.

It's inceasingly wall-to-wall condos, cappuccinos, and yups Sare - but still nice in its Palm Cove way. I think part of the beach is netted - which might be handy for April.

It is nice but very expensive. The main street fronting the beach is just a mass of trees and vegetation. Very pretty, tropical and shaded. The beach is netted during the stinger season and they even have Lifeguards. Lots of restaurants and 5 star accommodation. A couple of crocs have been caught "surfing" the "waves". I can only recommend you look up Wotif to find the cheapest places. Why not try the other Northern beaches perhaps Trinity, Clifton. I still like Cairns though for accommodation. I know it's not as nice but it is central to all the attractions and you really only need to sleep there. The bus service is excellent in Cairns.
Palm Cove is full of wannabe pretentious to55ers... It's still got a decent jetty though for 'chucking a line in' ... I'm orf up to the Cairns area (house hunting) tomorrow arv.

gads.
when i first went there, there were three places to stay...some self contained townhouses, the Reefhouse (before it was bought by Sebel) and a hotel down the south end. No shops, no cafes, no nets, no lifeguards, nothing.
might have to go further north then...cape trib or something.
I lived at Yorkeys Knob through 1974 Sare - there was very little there then too - just lots of sugar cane, two nice beaches, one little shop and a milkbar. Half Moon Bay was empty - skinny-dipping country - no marina. Saw the biggest white pointer shark ever swimming just off the main beach there (some local was walking horses in the "surf"). All things change ... but I still like Port Douglas as a base.

Good luck 'ouse-'untin' 'tox!
