What happens with P&O Cruises if you don't pay the bill at the end, in Australia?

Aside from the funny stuff like "washing the dishes out the back", What actually happens?

Do they just write off the debt? If not, What debt collector do they use?

Serious answers only, please.

Two possibilities present themselves:

  1. You cannot get off the ship until you have paid, because your passenger card that must be scanned flags you as unpaid
  2. They simply debit the credit card that you must provide when you buy the ticket or board the ship and register

Why do you ask?

BTW what is negotiable is the daily gratuity charge (normally around $US11.00 per person per day), however this is fraught too, since it allegedly goes to pay crew salaries/bonuses, so if you don't pay it - or you pay less - you are punishing already very low-paid workers.

yes as per ianw6705 you would have to swipe a credit card at start / before voyage - they just debit that -- so not sure what "bill" you are talking about; also usually on day to day basis you have a pre-loaded P&O onboard card which you use (effectively using cash) so again I am unsure what "bill" you could accrue?

Passengers do accrue very substantial bills during a cruise ... primarily for alcohol, but also such things as spa treatments, or buying trinkets in duty-free, or using the specialty restaurants. Big bills do accrue (since there is no cash on board) - especially if you don't pay them off as you go.

But I concede we've never had a pre-loaded cash-card (P&O or any other cruise line).

I see - been while since I've been on cruise - 3 times I have, I had only two choices both 'cashless' either I got a pre-loaded cruise card once I got on board, put money on it - then could use at bars / food / shops etc until ran out then would go back to bursar (whatever its called) and load more money using credit card or use a cruise card connected to my credit/debit card-- its called 'cashless cruising' there was no option to bill to a berth/cabin/ your account-- it would appear from what you say things have changed if people can now build up big bills against there berth / cabin/account.
I still don't follow how P&O wouldn't have some system in place to have taken card imprint at begin / before cruise, as hotels do - seems strange. .

I imagine when a cruise is booked and a credit card supplied they do a credit check...

No, they definately do NOT do any credit checks.

And its illegal in NSW to detain a debtor.

So I'm guesting if your credit card bounces at the end of the trip, they'll just write off all debts for drinks.

I'm really such surprised no-one has tried t before, or doesn't admit to it.

I very much doubt that they would just write off the debt. If your credit card is maxed out or cancelled, I'm guessing they will require another card, or for you to enter into some agreement to pay before they allow you off the ship.

And people probably have tried it, so that's why I'm sure there would be procedures to deal with it.

I tend to agree with you, Libby.

Does anyone know P&O's procedures?
