What's the story with places already fully booked up in Sydney CBD for New Years Eve. I have tried Sydney Central & Railway Square YHA and they are fully booked! NYE is 6 months away - this is crazy. I have managed to book Railway Square up to the 31st December but can't book after that. Can anyone give me an alternative place to stay for the 31st, 1st and 2nd - need a place in or just around the CBD and of a similar standard for about AUD$35/night. Any suggestions?

If it's any comfort, this happens every year, around May-June. Many hostels won't take bookings more than six months out (ie, before 25 June or so), but at least you seem to have secured YHA Railway Square up to and including 30 December. The other issue you face is minimum booking periods; many hostels demand 7-12 nights minimum, AND no check-in or check-out between Christmas Day and about 2 January. The market rules I guess. No other advice to offer other than looking at www.hostelz.com and emailing or calling as many as you can stand. Good luck.

I emailed Railway Square a few days ago to ask about booking, and they told me that they're not taking bookings for Christmas/NYE yet, and that bookings would open via the YHA Australia website in June. When I tried it earlier today, it still wouldn't let me book that far ahead, so I guess try again later in the month.
