Hi,
my family of 4 (kids 6,9) will be hitting Darwin in July at end of their school holidays. We plan 4 night in Darwin and 10 driving and camping in Kakadu,Litchfield and Katherine. we thought a 4WD may give us some good experiences away from the main areas and some new sights but in that time frame, is it worth the big extra cost? suggestions welcome, especially around good hire companies. Thanks :)

Have you looked at a map to see where the 4WD tracks are? I think you don't need a 4WD but if you get one, then just make sure you find some of those 4WD tracks to enjoy. Don't drive too fast, especially at night.
If you're just heading to the obvious tourists sites then a 4WD is handy, but not essential. The roads to the towns, major tourists sites and accommodation are all paved.
But a 4WD would give you a few more options, and, in the Territory, be a fair bit safer should you strike any wildlife.

carry as much munchies plus liquids you feel you might need ? , then double it prices not for budget minded due to shipping and storage costs. then be prepared to listen to Can I have a bag of chips etc ?since the nippers know u have them. lol
