On your way from Melbourne to Sydney, there are a number of fruit growing areas all keen to hire backpackers to pick fruit. They can also provide accommodation.

To Travoyageur,

Would you recommend that shared accommodation is more beneficial if you're staying long term, as me and my friends are unsure if we will be staying in Melbourne long term of short term and I guess if its short term hostels would be better right?

Lots of people have recommended getting a campervan or something of sorts to travel around in as we do want to travel within Aus and potential around the gold coast, however if there are any other recommendations I'm more then happy to take them on board.

Is the fruit picking volunteer work or could it also be paid work? I can potentially see it being voluntary especially if you get your accommodation for free which is also grand!!

Hostels and even cheaper hotels (if there are a few of you). If you are staying long term, you may be able to rent a place. However, that will be difficult without reference and work. Otherwise there are lots of opportunities to share within Mebourne and Sydney (not sure of other areas).

Campervan is good. It will get hot in summer and cold in winter unless you stay at a paid powered site(expensive).

Fruit picking is usually low paid work. Low paid work in Australia is still good compared to many places.

Yes I've heard its hard to rent a place if you don't have work, in terms of house sharing how would you find things like that?

Oh good i think food picking (as strange as it sounds) would be a good opportunity.
