Great ianw6705...and yukkk!! Thanks for the heads up re: tarp. ;)

Anywhere central sounds good to me. It looks like there are some bbqs at "the southern bank of the Yarra River, anywhere between Princes Bridge and Swan Street Bridge, where there are numerous barbecues and shady trees". Could be nice to look out on the city?

Flagstaff Gardens is central option too- have just found out it was the first melb cemetery, so maybe we could do a halloween PU there instead?! ;)

I did a reccie of the Flagstaff Gardens, and I think the BBQ area is a wee bit light-on for atmosphere and facilities ... South Bank of the Yarra is looking good - people could have a post-prandial stroll through the Botanical Gardens, or even through the Burnley Tunnel.

Here's a goodie - [Burnley Tunnel street view|http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=EN&f=q&q=Melbourne&ie=UTF8&ll=-37.820277,144.975758&spn=0.007695,0.019312&z=16&layer=c&cbll=-37.824149,144.974277&panoid=0mxQudZTOYpnjpp_3HNCSA&cbp=1,272.0895331541648,,0,-0.20180277194294655]

CC you wouldn't have to worry. Melbourne men are noted for their chivalry and you could be rescued by a genuine snag!

any interstaters coming in on Jetstar - happy to pick you up from Avalon to get the Lara train to Melbs - can't guarantee getting you back though.

So come on you Melbourne peoples - where is this bbq going to be ?

Around the Yarra sounds okay - is there plenty of seating - no way am I going to sit on the ground - too far down.

Following my two-week sojourn to the Deep North (aka the Gold Coast) I undertake to reccie the likely spots, and provide a full report in order to finalise the best bbq location. You shan't be sitting on the ground Poppy - heaven forbid!
