I will be heading to Sydney on 29th September on a 1 year working holiday visa and I wondered if anyone could offer some advice regarding jobs, and if they're relatively easy to get? I will be taking with me £3500 (pounds) and will be staying in a hostel to begin with. I'd like to get a job pretty much straight away if possible and am open to any job really. I currently work in an office as a project lead for an education company so I have good admin experience, though I would love to try bar work, café work, etc, for a difference experience. I've owned horses all my life too so would love to work on a ranch at some point but am thinking of doing that a little later with the hope it'll help with gaining my second year visa.

My aim is to do a little travelling round Australia so I'd like to be working & saving to enable me to do this. Sydney is where I am starting my crazy adventure :)

I'm going it alone and am pretty frightened, lol, but equally just as excited! :)

Thank you in advance!
Maddy

If you focus on the fact that thousands have successfully survived what you are about to undertake then you'll forget about the fear.

Hospitality work is more usually a reliable option when you have experience; if you are thinking bar work you will need to get an RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol, google it) certificate. Your best bet for admin will be agency work. I suspect most agencies will require a face to face interview; it would be worthwhile to research the agencies that are out there. Australia's unemployment rate is about 6% which is pretty high in relation to the past decade but since 4% is zero it is not too bad. And hey, it atleast it is not the 1980s!!!

You've AUD6,000-plus which is a pretty good number and, living frugally, will give you a couple of months or more in a hostel and etc. Just be aware that saving is always challenging (if you work on that AUD700 per week figure, which certainly can be less, you can see the challenge - the minimum wage before tax or loadings is @AUD670 per week).

The regional work can be seasonal, perhaps less so when it comes to hoses, but don't let the time get away from you.

Yes you will be fine, a perfect time to arrive, weather wise, in Sydney and NSW.

I am always amazed at how quickly backpackers pick up work in Sydney. Perhaps word of mouth in hostels?

As a first suggestion though perhaps, given will be coming in just before Christmas, look into becoming a Christmas Casual at either Myer or David Jones' department store. That would see you working centrally from Oct through to late January.

For bar work, isn't there a certificate you have to have? Bar worthiness or something? That means you know how to recognise a drunk and refuse any more alcohol..... anyway, you do have to have one and it will cost you to get it but I think you can do it online (maybe wrong).

You will find Maddy that most hostels have notice boards that will have plenty of job ads but just as likely you might find that many are not worth considering and your own work nous ought to allow you to do some filtering.
Some hostels can be something of a culture shock if you are not used to using them and there are alternatives that could be about the same price or even cheaper but having better conditions so check out http://www.accommodationaustralia.com.au/ or sharehouses.com.au and Gumtree is also a good site for finding both accomodation and work.
I know of people who have even got a nanny/housekeeping style live in job of a few hours a day and then gone out to get a hospitality job as well, good accomodation with pay and also time to earn some more money, those kind of arrangements found on Gumtree.
I would not rush straight into working for you will want a couple of days rest to get over jetlag, a good time to just do some walking/exploring around the CBD/harbour, take a couple of ferry rides to explore more of what Sydney has and just get a general idea of what there is in Sydney to explore more of later.
On a site like Gumtree, you may also find opportunities to work on farms as we call those American ranches out this eastern side of that big lake called the Pacific Ocean.
If you do have trouble finding some work, also have a look at wwoof.com.au and helpx.net sites as through their membership and guide book you will find many country work opportunities in return for accomodation and meals and though in doing that it does not qualify you for the second WHV, it can be a way of finding some paid work to help you qualify.
Anyway, sounds like you have been thinking about your adventure some, have something of a plan and some savings ( knowledge you ought to keep private )so in continuing to plan, think and be wise, you ought to have a good adventure.
