Ruthie, you could narrow your field of choice some from quite a range of tour companies and if you just google Tasmania Tours for starters, you'll see what I mean, there being tours to suit different budgets, different time frames and different regions of the state.
Some will cater more for younger people but you do often find on such tours you can get a mix of younger, middle aged and older people so if one particular tour interests you, do not let a photoshoot of a heap of young tanned backpackers deter you - underdownunder possibly one for the younger set and then at the other extreme, you have the APT tours, usually in larger buses.
You might even find touring with younger people is not only more fun but even addictive.
You'll see that there are a heap to explore and compare costs on.

Thank you for info I know what you mean by travelling with younger people I travelled the Great Ocean Road with a young set and I sure had more fun with them than my own friends

I googled seniors tours but only found some pretty expensive tours (averaging $300-400 per day).

If you are reasonably active you could always just visiting Hobart and Launceston and do day tours from there. This is what we did a couple of years ago. You will still see quite a lot and it would work out much cheaper.

The day tour idea is a good one, there are a lot of straight forward day tours from Hobart or Launceston. You could split your time between the two cities taking the coach between the two locations. It may just be a bit quiet though in the evening.

Thank you for your good advice I'm your age - and from the replies I've received think I will go it alone - don't want to be in a bus with 50 people - did you go to Launceston as well as Hobart? Thanks for info on Cascade Brewery

It's easy to book a Redline coach between Hobart and Launceston. Redline

In Hobart we used Great Expeditions who were fantastic. I highly recommend them Great Expeditions

In Launceston we used McDermotts Coaches for Cradle Mountain but they were pretty crappy - we went all that way for just one hour up there. Ridiculous. There are other companies that you can use.

I loved Launceston so much that I bought a house there after I visited. It's a fantastic little town/city/regional centre.
