Hello!
I'm trying to get together some ideas on how to leave Cairns without spending too much money. Everything around here is rather expensive (we're talking at least $100 for any day-long activity so because of that I'm just sitting around - I'm growing roots here - which ain't good - so I need out) and would like to kind of work my way down the East Coast and get to Sydney by 15th June (accommodation already booked in Cairns till Sunday 3rd so looking to get away on Monday 4th June). Was thinking of getting onto a greyhound and do some stop-overs here and there on the way down - seems like a sensible idea but as Australia was not in my travel-plans I'm a bit at a loss. Any suggestion more than welcome.
Thank you for your time. Erv

With only eleven days for a Cairns > Sydney trip, you won't be dawdling. You can buy a distance pass with Greyhound that might be cost effective. I would probably dedicate three nights (two full days) at each of the following: Airlie Beach (Whitsundays), Hervey Bay (Fraser Island), and Byron Bay (Byron Bay) - all with good hostels. The other two nights and days you will consume travelling on the road. Nice road trip indeed - however getting pretty cool after Byron, so might as well just travel through to Sydney. The YHA hostel at Bellingen is nice if you wish to break the trip a bit, or Port Macquarie or Newcastle - both bigger coastal cities.

If youre really tight on money, go for the Premier bus. Same stops just less buses. Call them up on 13 34 10 & ask for their office is in Cairns & they will put you in touch with a company called We of the Never Never. They will give you discounts on all the prices you see around town including the bus pass.
