It is, in theory because of obstruction to traffic laws, illegal to hitchhike in Victoria and Queensland under many circumstances.

^^ got a lift with charlieville police while hitching once, they even got on the radio onto the telstra ute they were following and got me a lift with him to the next town , augathella.

did cost me $300 though..
