Maybe not with wine, Secco.

I was there a couple of weeks ago and the two of us had 3 courses each and a bottle of wine, and tip, got in just under $200.

Note on Vlados.. if you're not into meat, meat and more meat, don't go there! It's generally a set menu, which is 3 courses of different meat-centric dishes- trust me, i live around the corner!
I'd suggest Movida on Hosier Lane in the city- you can walk there is 5 mins from Market St (go straight up Flinders St, over Swanston, and watch out for the Forum Theatre on your left. Hosier Lane is just after The Forum). It is the most spectacular tapas (and other Spanish) food you've ever had... and $200 will definitely cover it. Make sure you book though, it's relatively small (and atmospheric) and demand is pretty high. I'd try a weeknight rather than a weekend if you can.

It's modern Italian, make sure you try the scallops for entree...mmmm juicy! Great for a romantic night without being cheesy. Again, $200 would cut it. http://www.bottega.com.au/

Let us know how you go!

OK, the Mudds are back in Newcastle.
We didn't take up Eli's suggestion on Gingerboy, so will leave that for another visit.
On Thursday night we ate at The Flower Drum. Asian, and supposedly the best restaurant in Melbourne and one of the top 100 in the world. They said we wouldn't get a seat, but we rocked up and got one. two courses each and a bottle of wine came to $197.30, and I prpomise you, it was the best restaurant of any category that I have eaten in in Australia. The standard of service was way superior, and the food was perfectly done.
Friday night we ate at the meat and Wine Co. another excellent choice. perfectly cooked steak. even sang Mrs Mudd a happy birthday. superior service, and two courses each, a garlic bread and a bottle of wine came to $190. It was worth it.
We didn't have much time to explore Melbourne but Thursday night caught us at the casino. Very busy. Canberra Casino is a morgue compared to this one. Friday afternoon we just strolled around the river (is it the Yarra?).
We had our very first ever tram ride! and went to Queen Victoria markets which were a disappointment.
Other than that, Melbournians are very friendly buggers, and we intend to have a more relaxed visit in the near future.
Thanks all, for tips.

Yep, it is theYarra river - did you watch the fireworks at the Casino? They are celebrating their 10th birthday.
We missed them by seconds Friday night - had to be somewhere else - could hear it all and see reflections in the buildings - I think the brat child was a bit disappointed.
Good you had two great meals here, we went to The WAterfront at Station Pier on Saturday and weren't impressed.
Viccy Market is a great place for cheap stuff - must admit it isn't as good as it was about 10 years ago.

Yes!!!!
We were walking to the restaurant and saw the row of flames going off. That was interesting, and we were just sitting down in the restaurant clinking a glass saying happy birthday and they let go the fireworks. it was fantastic. I told "she who must be obeyed" that I organised it for her. hehehe.
