Airline family (older couple) last minute trip to Christmas Island. Since we are not 100% sure we will get on planes standby we are unable to book hotels in advance.....Hoping to leave Los Angeles, Wednesday, 16/12....think we can find rooms at the last minute upon arrival? What are the other don't misses aside from the crab migration which is the prime reason we are going. Any suggestions re local guides...love the outdoors, scenery, wildlife, birds etc etc.
mmm -accommodation on Christmas very limited - assume you will be flying into Perth? So all I can suggest is when you get to Perth you try and get accom. before booking flight to Xmas Island. Also there is a Xmas Island tourist website https://www.christmas.net.au/ - may be of help.
Airline family (older couple) last minute trip to Christmas Island.
What are you hoping / planning to do there?
Unsure. Haven't thoroughly researched it yet..whatever locals recommend in the way of walks, hikes, local fawn and fauna, outdoor photos...we just get up and go whenever we can with our flying benefits..spent lots of time on west coast down under...love entire country and thought we would check out Christmas Island only because it exists and because of its remoteness...thanks
I haven't been to Christmas Island (although have known a few people who have lived and worked there). There seems to be a reasonably common view that the Cocos-Keeling Islands even further west - but still part of Australia - are more beautiful and tourist-friendly ... if your flying privileges can get you there as well.
thank you both Ian and gcn.... main goal is to see the crabs...anything after that is a +....not sure our time will allow us to get to see the crabs on time if we stop at Kokos....the flight back to Perth doesn't stop at Kokos (with our benefits and schedule.. oh well ..there will be another time)....thanks again to both of you for your assistance.
As you may, or may not know, the migration is linked to spawning, which occurs at a different time every year depending on the moon and tides.
It's underway now, and expected to last until early January.
Some great information here.

This is a small island, with not a lot of accommodation, so I wouldn't be leaving this to chance. Book here https://www.christmas.net.au/plan-your-trip/book-accommodation.html
