Hi all,

I've found a car to hire on rental cars.com but they are charging £80 or $132 as a young driver fee as I'm 22 years old. And then on top of that a further £180 or $300 as a one way fee.

Does anyone know of any companies that don't add on these fees please? I've planned my whole GOR trip around hiring this car but I don't want to pay that money. The car only cost £140 for a weeks hire.

There are a couple of backpacker rental companies (wicked and others) who claim they do not slug drivers under 25, or even under 21. They deal expressly with this market. Might be worth a search for them.

Most car hires have a extra charge for under 25s as insurance is much higher for under 25s. Also most charge a fee for one way hire irrespective of age. Are you looking on the UK site or Oz site (rental cars.com.au)? Also where are you picking up car? Maybe better to go to Oz yellowpages (www.yellowpages.com.au)and do search on local car hire places in the town/city you are driving from - look for 'rent a wreck' type providers.
Also not sure why you just want to rent one way - reality is GOR (Geelong to Warnambool) itself only takes about 4 hrs to drive so if you planed to take your time and stop a few places would only take you 4 hrs to drive back from where you started and thus save the one way fee.

Almost all the rent-a-wreck type places do not allow a one-way rental interstate.

From previous posts, our OP is heading from Melbourne to Adelaide via the GOR and beyond.

I'm spending a few days in adelaide and then driving to melbourne via great ocean road over 4 days. I'm happy to pay the under age fee if that is normal as it's only £80 but don't want to pay 300 AUD for one way fee

Yes ... you're going one-way Adelaide to Melbourne ... it was the other recent poster going the reverse direction.

If you do not wish to pay the one-way fee then you might consider a bus that goes via the GOR, but most of them go the direct (but fairly uninspiring) way down the freeway.

OK i get now why you want one way - again I suggest you check the Oz site (rental cars.com.au) if you have not already; also www.drivenow.com.au/ is another comparison website but you can search the ones who do not charge a one way fee then deal direct with the rental firm.
Also if above no help as I suggest look at Yellowpages in Adelaide and see if you can save by dealing direct with car rental company like Backpacker Campervan & Car Rentals rather than one of the big name rentals. May be worth a try.

You may want to consider another alternative and that is do a three day tour Adelaide to Melbourne that does the Grampians and GOR eastern end which is the more spectacular section.
Have a look at http://www.groovygrape.com.au/ , one company ha has been around for a while and they generally cter to younger people.
You'll likely find that costs will be quite comparable when you consider hire costs, fuel, accomodation and food and with the tour you will have some company.
