Me and a friend are traveling from Cairns to Melbourne and would like to rent a car.

The only problem is he is 18 and i am 19 so we are having a bit of trouble finding a suitable rental firm.

If any of you know of a car rental company who will rent to under 21s and allow us to return it in Melbourne we would be most grateful.

Many thanks

Yeah I've been having the same problem. I am coming back to Aus for a 6 week holiday and didn't even consider it. I live in Germany and here you gotta be 18 to drive but you can rent a car from 18 too whereas you can drive at 16 in Aus and you gotta be 25 to rent a car, weird.

Tried calling Hertz & Budget and all them big companies and of course that was pointless although I did fail to find the "we don't rent to people under 21" part on the Hertz Website, in fact, when I went through their very ordinary booking system all I found was this:

"Approximate rental charges are based on available information at the time of reservation for renters age 25 and older. For renters under age 25 an additional daily age differential charge applies, see "Rental Qualifications and Requirements" link below to the right for details. Additional fees or surcharges may be applied at time of rental." I did check their link, nothing in there. Most of the sites just "avoid saying it" somewhat which i found rather annoying.

But after a while of googling, I came across the following site:

Car Rentals for People Aged Under 21

For whatever reason, you can only book station wagon's, don't ask me why, I called them and the lady had no idea why either. Just go through the booking system on their website, you are "lucky" in that you have Cairns and Melbourne.

From memory, Under-21's pay a $15 per day surcharge on the car's (you get some sort of breakdown of the fee's during booking) and yeah, their rates really aren't that bad, I will probably end up paying a few hundred more through them than I would have with one of the bigger companies and I am getting a station-wagon which I totally don't need but at least I can get a car I guess.

But if anyone has any other suggestions then please post them, I'd be keen to checkout some other's too, somewhere where I don't need to hire a bigger car than necessary.
