Im heading to oz on a whv for a year and want to get a car.
What is the best way to go about getting insurance for it?

Any rough idea's of cost for a 22 year old guy, would just be a typical cheap backpackers style car?

A $3,000.00 car with third party. fire and theft insurance would cost you approx. $200 in Queensland.
It can vary on a number of things (traffic offenses, suburb where policy is taken out etc.) but that should give you a general idea.
Good Luck :)
Make sure you bring any relevant insurance details from your home country eg. no claims bonus, evidence of previous insurance policies etc. It just helps to smooth the process if you can provide some evidence to say youve been insured before. Dont go for the fully comprehensive insurance option, as theres no need to do that UNLESS you also want to insure your own car for driver at fault collisions. Shop around for deals, as costs can vary widely. Also be aware of excess amounts, as these too can also vary widely. Be sure to check the fine print to see if others can drive your car and be insured. If you are sharing the car with someone else, have their name put on the policy aswell.
Watch those NSW drivers, mad as cut snakes...
#5 is right make photocopies of your current motor insurance policy in your home country ie NCD, policy number.
In Western Australia the payment for your "Rego" includes Third Party Insurance. I think it should the same in all other States and Territories.
If you are after Comprehensive cover, you have a choice of over a dozen insurance companies in every Australian Syaye.
But they all levy hefty premiums or excesses on young drivers age 25 or below.
When you ge into Australia just give them a call.
(Be forewarned: Calls to financial institutions in Oz can be frustrating i.e You call 13 NN 90. They answer......"Hello, thank you for calling Honest Insurance', ....Please press 1 for health insurance, 2 for home and content, 3 for motor, 4 if you are clueless.......then press 1 for new policy, 2 for renewal, 3 for a motor claim, 4 others,...........briing briing ............Please hold, we value your call and ALL our operators are attending to customers.........briiing, briiing, briiiing ........... our website is on 24/7 our website address is www.youareasucker.com.au.................,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and "the computer says no".)
Good luck.
Checked with RAQC last week - they dont insure cars which are not garaged in Queensland - you can lie and give a fake address but they wont pay up if you have to claim. We ended up getting comprehensive insurance on a 4WD worth $7k for about $320 odd a year - but we are over 25 and had a good no claims history - this was with Commonwealth Bank - they called us and were very helpful.

All the above may be a little confusing for the outsider so let me summarise -
Third party insurance covers insurance for any people involved in a car accident. It is compulsory and is usually taken out and paid for when you regisiter your car each year. varies from state to state but usually only 1 or 2 companies do it. I think I'm paying about $600pa in Victoria
Third party property insurance covers damage you might do to someone elses car but DOES NOT cover damage to your car. Depends on the value of your car and what sort of a risk you want to take. At the very least you should get this. Quite a few companies who do this. My sons have used AAMI and seem OK. From memory about $150 pa Can also get fire and theft for your car - for extra
Third party insurance that covers damage to your car and other cars damaged in an accident. Quite few companies do this and cost various signidficantly depending on previous claim rating, value and type of your car, age of driver. Ranges from say $600 to $1500.
If you claim on your policy (called the excess) can be a lot especially for drivers under 25 ($1500??)
