We've rented a campervan in Australia for two trips - 7 weeks and 4 months. As stated by others you don't have to pay any excess fees but then you will be responsible for whatever the full deductible is. We were offered several options regarding the excess deductible. The more we paid the smaller the deductible amount became. I multiplied the daily excess fees times the number of days we had the van. In both cases we chose to take the chance on doing damage to the vehicle and being responsible for the total deductible. You need to think this through carefully though because it does not take too much damage to reach the deductible amount.

I suspect that independent insurance cover may be treated like no excess in the sense that you will have to leave the excess amount on your credit card and claim with the independent company after the fact. So make sure you have lots of available credit on your card.

Every credit card I've ever had that includes excess auto rental insurance coverage has excluded rental of a recreational vehicle which includes campervans. This may not be true for credit cards in your country but do read the fine print.

In regard to free spots to camp we sometimes found them but more often paid.

Photos and road reports of our circumnavigation of Australia posted on our website below if you are interested.
