If you do stay at Lennox Head, go to Broken Head, it has an interesting walk around the headland, continue on the a coast drive to Ballina. there is good camping at Nambucca Heads and safe water for the children. and I stress do take the lakes way to Forster, http://www.forstergetaway.com/pebbly-beach-the-tanks/ there is a lookout just south with views over the myall lakes. Enjoy your trip
Hi fiz,
All good tips from travoyageur, those alternative routes are definitely worth checking out. I would also put in a vote for you to keep South West Rocks on your itinerary. It's a beautiful place, with safe beaches for swimming with younger kids.
Another option in the Byron area, but with smaller (just) crowds, in Brunswick Heads, just 15 minutes to the north of town. I would recommend that you bypass Kingscliff and head straight to Bruns (as it's known locally) and use it as a base for exploring the Northern Rivers region for the next couple of days.
Bellingen is a great little town to visit and you might enjoy breaking away from the coast for a day to visit it.
