And yes ... it is mysterious that Australia was left alone by all the colonial powers for effectively a century and a half. But to be fair, if your first impression was the country from say Perth to Cape York, then not a lot of it looked too promising.
Even Cook over-estimated the fecundity and value of the east coast ... most of it is still pretty harsh (Eden to Noosa is pretty good, I concede).
