While its still school holidays and plane fares are high, maybe Perth?
Have you seen Rottness and the wildlife on it?
I have been there twice and would go again.
Brisbane is of course closer to Sydney and Melbourne.

If you want a classic Australian surf/camp experience head to Crescent Head. 5 hrs drive north of Sydney. The national park campsites are all right on the beach or if you have the budget there are great cabins at Crescent Head Holiday Park which would be a better option if you need internet access. Crescent is a national surf reserve with world class right hand point breaks.You can even hire boards at the local post office.

Byron is also a great option if you want more options for hotels, restaurants and bars but still the classic Aussie surf feel. The internet connections may be slightly more reliable and you would also have the option to fly.

Whatever you do have a great stay you are going to love it :)

The Sunshine Coast in SE Queensland.

Lots of nice spots along the coast all on good beaches with a wide range of accommodation types. Lots to see and do in the area - Fraser Island, hinterland site seeing, Australia Zoo, Brisbane (not much to see really), theme parks on the Gold Coast (if that is of interest).

Easy access by a major airport.

Thank you all for your feedback. I have decided to go to Perth for 2 weeks. Aside from exploring the city (Kings Park, Fremantle, etc), Pink Lake (just take a ferry from Fremantle to the island, rent a bike and explore?) and the Pinnacles (is there any public transport to there?), what other highlights can I photograph?

You can take the train south to Bunbury, or within Perth head out to Guildford. A weekend trip to Kalgoolie is another option too.

Fremantle is lovely and rotnest island is worth a visit. If you get time you could head north to see the pinnacles- they are amazing

I'm looking to travel to Ayers Rock in 4 weeks. I take it that the only way to see the area is by renting a car, which I have done via Avis for $70USD for 2 days (200 free km). I'm looking to reserve a room at the Outback Pioneer because it is the cheapest option in the area. How expensive is the food at the restaurants? I have read of people buying food ready to eat at the gas station?

Aside from The Olgas and Uluru, what else can I do in 2 days?

Any other recommendations are welcome.
