yeah good suggestions in there, especially with Straddie or Moreton.

don't book your flight back to melbourne until about a week before you are flying, as you most probably have no idea where you'll be at by then, you can fly from almost anywhere along the east coast to melbourne fairly cheaply with a weeks notice if you are flexible within 2 days.. like if it doesn'y matter if you spend a night or two in melbourne or fly in and out the same day then you will get a cheap ticket..

there's just as much chance that you will make it only as far as northern nsw as north queensland in this time, and if you are in northern nsw with only a few days to go then its easy to get to gold coast of brisbane for a flight back to melbs, but a near impossibility to get to cairns..

really this is all that matters, its no fun rushing just because you thought you'd save $50 on buying a ticket early and skipping by some really beautifull places in a headlong rush to get north to catch a plane only to have a cyclone block your path anyhow and still have to shell out heaps for another ticket anyhow..

btw , i recomend blue mountains, anna bay, bellingen, dorrigo, mullumbimby, and maybe nimbin along the way..
though all the country around northern nsw is really beautifull..

and i recomend you skip, as far as possible, coffs harbour (for bellingen instead) and brisbane, apart from as a transit stop..

Great Ocean Road....
Hoping you didn't book something around there due to the fires atm.
