Hi

Wonder if anyone can help.

I was hoping to travel from Alice Springs to Uluru by public transport but from what I've been reading there doesn't seem to be anything like the greyhound that runs this route so potentially I would have to go on an organised tour from Alice.

Can anyone recommend a travel company that runs these trips - looking for something 2-3 days and I do consider myself to reasonably fit with regards to walks etc. I know there are many but as I'm in my late 40's I was looking for one where there would be a good mix of ages. I have heard Emu travels mentioned, has anyone been on one of their trips? Looking to travel next month.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Clare

We did an Emu Run 3 day camping tour and thoroughly enjoyed it, although we are around 70 and were the oldest ones on the trip. We were able to give the young nervous backpackers some tips.

Are you absolutely certain there is not a greyhound bus to/from Yulara to Alice. I think there is. You can do tours from Yulara to Uluru and Kata Juta if i'm not mistaken.

hereI think this is what you need. It will take you to Yulara what they call alice springs resort. Then you will need to get to the rock from there which is about 10 k or so but i cna't remember exactly. You will want at least 2 days out there but the pass is for three days.

If you really want to just go from Alice Springs to Uluru you could always take this: Greyhound

And just not return to Yulara.

ALL tour companies based in Alice Springs will do a 3 day tour to Uluru etc. I was talking to one of the company owners recently about this - they all only do 3 day tours now and don't really do 5 day tours anymore (except for outrageously expensive ones).

Hi

Thanks for the suggestions. I think the Emu camping trip is more what I am looking for, will send them an email for more info.

I did double check with greyhound and they run no scheduled services to Yulara. I think their route map is a bit misleading as I think what they expect people to do is take one of their tours...I got a bit out off with them as a company because they say their Kakadu trip is designed for fit and active people between 18 and 45 - plenty of people are fit and active outside this narrow age range.

Yeah, Greyhound say they offer various services along tourist routes, such as Alice-Uluru and back, and the Great Ocean Road in Victoria- but all they do is on-sell you to an established Tour company. In this case, it's The Rock Tours, who are a good operator. Google them.

Saying their Kakadu tour is designed for fit and active people between 18 and 45 is a method of dissuading certain elements who have different requirements- such as party animal backpackers who want to do the bare minimum, and tourists who expect to be waited on hand and foot and do no walking to see attractions (example from my own experience, senior citizens who expect a 5 star service at a 2 star price). It's just a way to say "this tour involves walking and hiking and is not just staring out of a bus window". They won't turn away a 46 year old, put it that way, nor likely a 60 year old who is willing to get amongst it (as many are).
