I'm wanting to go up to Airlie beach over Easter, leaving from Brisbane, and was wondering if anyone else is planning this trip and might want to share a rental car, or have any recommendations for shared transport (not hitching and cheaper than the bus would be preferred).

It's 1120 kms each way with no diversions - I trust you're going for more than just the four days of Easter. You can have a look at needaride, where you can register the ride you want or an offer of a place in a vehicle. Don't know how well patronised it is. Other than that, you need to look at hostel noticeboards. By the time you pay for fuel and accomm, a flight at $230 or so might be economical - depends how you value your time as well.

Hi OP, most of this road is flat, going through monotonous cane country with nothing to see, you will have to allow a few extra days to make the diversions off the road if you want to see any of the coast or sights. Otherwise just pay the money and fly. Petrol is currently AUD $1.29 per litre in Australia and your average hire car would be 10 litres per 100km - Ian may have a point is probably cheaper to fly if you can book in advance. Virgin blue fly to proserpine which is less than an hour from airlie beach - just a thought.
