HI,
you all have been so helpful , i thought i might impose yet again. I have a trip planned for june/july, travelling up to cape tribulation for 5 days, then atherton area for 3 days then hichinbrook for 5 days--then we have to be in cairns for 4 days--after which we have 4days/3nights to fill in-i was thinking of heading back south to mission beach or to head north up to cooktown or someplace else (frankly i would love to get to hervey bay to whale watch , but it's too far............)
so I am open to ideas!!!! where else in QLD should we see (or see more of?) Is mission beach a good place for a few days or should we look elsewhere?
many thanks,
Lori

isn't that really far to drive? i would certainly do either if it wasn't bu the distance for that amount of time seems like alot...NO?

The Whitsundays, or even Townsville is a long way to drive for a few days.
I think Mission Beach is a good idea.
-Take the ferry from Clump Point for a day trip to Dunk Island -- Highly recommended.
-Visit the Licuala rain-forest and look for cassowaries.
I would second Mission Beach and the trip to Dunk Island indeed. I would also recommend the Tully River and its surrounding rainforests. Five days at Hinchinbrook might be a little too long in such a short trip - unless you're fixed on that part. If not, you could use it well elsewhere (eg, north of Cairns or the tablelands).

I would go with Mission Beach. A lovely short trip down from Cairns. Nothing much to do when you get there except to go to Dunk Island, which is worthwhile. You are re-tracing your steps though. You are going from Cairns to Hinchinbrook back to Cairns, to Mission Beach. Do you fly out of Cairns? Maybe there is a plane service from Cairns to Hervey Bay. The whales are certainly not to be missed if possible. If flying out of Brisbane, there is a service from Hervey Bay to Brisbane.

I have a friend who has just returned from Hervey Bay and says that it isn't whale season, so no whale watching. Might be worth checking that.
