We picked up a 85 landruiser (diesel - cheaper to run) for $7000 - you will need one as others have said.

As far as I know you don't need one if you are not going any further north than Cooktown and a re willing to stay on the bitumen road. There is very little off it. If you are going in the dry season then it should be no bother. It is bitumen all the way up to Cooktown now. A lovely trip.
