Suvarnabhumi Airport Bangkok cheap accomodtions

Hey fellow adventurers,

My wife, two teenagers (13 & 15) and I are going to explore Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam (in that order). We plan on spending 6 weeks give or take a week (return flight is open).

We will be flying into the new airport in Bangkok rather late at night. We are looking for good nearby and reasonalby priced accomodations. Any suggestioins?

Also, getting to Cambodia is a question mark. We read about the long slow route to cambodia border via busses that get kick backs from the hotels. Is the train a good bet? Is taking a bus to the border, crossing over and getting connecitons on the other side in Cambodia relatively easy?

Hello Walter,
If I were you, I would head for Sananwan Palace, which is the nearest place to stay near the airport. Check out the website www.bangpli.com. Look at the videos and you'll see that it is kid-friendly. There's a swimming pool and everything you need including advice on how to get to Cambodia in comfort for 100 baht.

Wether you go by train or public bus, the actual border crossing will be the same.

Try to get to Cambodia by train..........is it possible...i don't think so.

Some folks make a point of NOT staying at places that use this board to promote their own businesses.

Why doesn't the LP web site, in its accomodations section, have any listings for inexpensive and convenient hotels near the new airport. This question is being asked repeatedly, and that would seem to be a real service.

And in defense of #1, why is a recommendation not allowed, when LP itself makes "deals" with those listed on its accommodations section?

Sananwan is OK, nice people, but it still takes about 25 minutes to get there, the cabbies have trouble finding it and the car pick up service will cost you 500 baht. Taking the expressway into town late at night via taxi (around 350 baht) will only take about 1/2 an hour; however, if you have a morning or mid-day flight the next day, it may take an hour or more to get back to the airport.

Have a look at the overland section on Tales of Asia for getting to Cambodia from Bangkok. We did it recently and you can read about our adventure at Reets Blog - do not buy a ticket on a khao san bus. Catch a govt bus from Morchit Bus Station to the border. Get a tuktuk to the border from the bus station (about 6 km)... walk across the border and REFUSE to pay 1000 baht for your visas... have US$20 each ready... they will try tell you that it is now 1000 baht but just point at the sign above the counter and say no, tell them you have no baht and you are only paying $20. We almost caved in, even though we were well aware of their scam but we stuck to our guns and they reluctantly issued the visas (we felt so good to have not been scammed afterwards though!)... catch the free bus once through border control to the transport station... then get a taxi for about $35-45USD to Siem Reap.... the trip is pretty bumpy... ok its REALLY bumpy, but the scenery is amazing and a real eyeopener... to do it in a bus would be a living HELL... do not do it on a bus... that is the best advice I can give you!!!!

#3, you can get the train as far as Aranyaprathet then its just a short connecting bus to the border. When you get off the train, buses will be waiting, not the usual touts. You dont meet those till the actual border.<BR>Plus, I recall reading here about increased hassles and prices for taxis to S.R.
