calm beaches and resorts - koh samui ,koh phanganCountry forums / Thailand / Thailand
hi, could you recommend me calm beaches and budget accomodation in koh samui and koh phangan in June
this is monsun time so I'm looking calm water, good for snorkeling:) | 1
Snorkelling in the Gulf isn't as good as on some of the Andaman islands at any time, but in June you'll still get nice water. Try any of the small beaches up the east coast of Phangan for all-round chilled places to stay. | 2
Best snorkelling in the southern Gulf is at Ko Tao - and the east coast bays and south east bays are sheltered from the prevailing westerly winds of monsoon season so will tend to be calm. I'm heading there in June - this thread has some good info re budget places and nice snorkelling http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?threadID=1907528&messageID=17088373#17088373 On my Samui trip last August I saw 2 real nice lower priced beachfont places sheltered by reef so with calm water (albiet, a bit shallow low tide, but a short walk to deeper water if needed for this time of day) - one was OP on Chaweng and the other New Hut on Lamai. Beach is gorgeous both places - OP is the livelier location, New Hut more budget. Got some pix of both in the link below. Once again the east coast of Phangan is sheltered - a good aray of budget joints - I like Plaas on Ao Sadet (I stayed at the more expensive Mai Pen Rai - but still in budget territory), Phangan Treehouse on adjacent Had Thong Reng and White Wind on Thong Nai Pan Yai. On the north coast Bottle Beach is protected from the westerlies by a giant headland so would be calm and this joint has several budget places. Another west coast place appeals to me is Had Thian and neighbouring beaches. I'm going to try and make Bottle Beach and Had Thian in June. | 3
