I'm trying to figure out how I want to join the festivities on Nov 22. I know of the two big gatherings but they strike me as tourists only. How do locals celebrate?

I would like to see a lot of lanterns that night but don't think $90usd to be around 3,000 (assuming) other tourists is the experience in looking for. Any suggestions welcome!

I could also consider celebrating elsewhere if that's subjectively better.

You do not need go in any of those private places for lantern release; they are for tourists. Save your money and go to the real festival in town, that's where the locals are. There will be lanterns being released all over town, and for Loy Krathong festival they release the floating boat offerings on the river. Loy are the paper lanterns, and krathong are the boats.

You save a lot of money and avoid a tourist trap. Double whammy.

Any information on where the local/real festival(s) are located in town? And what time(s) they are?

Thanks!

They are all evening on the eastern moat (Thapae square) and the floating boat offerings are on the riverside. You can't miss it.
