Hi All,

My other half and I are heading to Thailand at the end of March. We're going to spend the majority of our time down south (Ko Lanta, Phi Phi, Khao Lak etc...) but we're spending 2 nights in Bangkok. I'm finding it really hard to figure out what neighborhood we should stay in in Bangkok. I hear the traffic is mental so would like to stay in a central location where it would be relatively easy to get around. I'm also trying to figure out what we should do during our 3 day stay. I'd definitely like to see the Imperial Palace and take a boat trip up river but otherwise, I'm undecided.

We're in our early thirties and fairly adventurous. We're probably looking to middle-range accomodation - nothing too skanky but nothing super expensive (100 USD or less per night...) Does anyone have suggestions for a good location to base ourselves, a good hotel or guesthouse and/or some fun tourist attractions?

Any thoughts would be well appreciated. :)

Cheers,
Diana

Hi Diana,

Where ytou stay would depend on what you want to do when you are in Bangkok and also what your budget is! Decide your plan and then ask the question would be my advice. Do you want shopping, temples or nightlife? I have lived all over Bangkok so if you decide send me a pm and I will tell you where I think is best. Hope you have fun.

If you book online and are willing to spend an extra $100, you could stay at one of the worlds finest hotels: THE ORIENTAL, included on many world "Top 10 lists". Also frequently placed on those lists is THE PENINSULA. Both are situated on the river but close to the Skytrain.

River "Express Boats" leave from a nearby pier and have stops close to the Palace area (#9) and other attractions, a lot more fun than sitting in a cab, stuck in traffic.

There are not many cities where you can stay in that level of hotel for about $150/pn

Try the Sawasdee Sukhumvit. It is a 5 minute walk from the BTS and is very quiet. Not very fancy, but clean and it's only around 800 baht per night double. If you want to step up a bit, the Asia hotel is around $45-45 per night and has a skytrain entrance connected to the hotel. #5s is also a good recommendation; fairly easy walk to the skytrain and quite a bit fancier than the other two.
