Is it just me or does Bangkok seemed to have lost a lot of tourists? I went for two weeks to the capital for some RnR and hardly found any westerners or any other tourists for that matter. What’s going on?

Judging the passengers I see lately other SEA destinations are preferred and many are just flying to Bangkok for transit purposes. Still the usual trickle going on to Samui and Phuket.

Every group has its own dynamics, if you can't see the idiot then it's probably you.
Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think :-D

This is low 'rain' season and the economies of the western countries are not exactly tearing hell off the cross. Check back in August for a more reliable update.

Even Koh Samui was very quite.
I got the best service, the best prices, and had zero waiting time,
i was treated like the king, but that happens when you have money and they all want it.

It usually goes dead after Songkran until mid-June when the N.American and Euro kids get their school holidays. Then usually kicks up for July-August, often our busiest months.

OP
compared to a similar time in years gone by?
How many years low season experience do you have?

Aside from the Low Season dip mentioned above, you can throw in the global recession where Europeans, Americans and Japanese are more concerned about keeping their jobs and their money than going on vacation to Thailand.

The general strengthening of the Thai baht over recent years has made the Bangkok hotel, shopping, eating, drinking thing much more expensive than it once was. I'm sure last years 'troubles' would play a factor also in tourists generally giving the place a miss.

The good news is that for those that DO visit there are some good hotel deals out there and shopping places are less crowded, though the prices of imported goods are still nothing special - and I can still buy a Nikon camera made in Ayutthaya cheaper in London than in Bangkok.
