Hi,
I am planning on being in thailand for 60 days, I was under the impression, up till this point, that my passport would be sufficient and i would be able to extend my stay for a nominal fee? Do i need to do something before i leave the United states?
Thanks,

You can get a Tourist Visa from Thai Consul before you leave US and you will get a 60 day stamp when you arrive which can be extended for 30 days.
Or.. if arriving by air with no visa you will receive a 30 day entry stamp which you can extend for 15 days.
.....if arriving by land with no visa you will receive a 15 day entry stamp which can be extended for 7 days.
The logical thing to do is get a Tourist Visa before you come to Thailand.

Not nominal fee , expensive 1900 baht.

Wandabug's post also clears up that matter in reply # 665 where it was suggested that the 15 day stamp couldn't be extended. It was always possible to extend it.

Recent Thai Immigration amendments include:

15 days visa extension at the border as opposed to the usual 30 days...this has been the case since December 2008
**
2-month deposit term for required funds for Non Immigrant Visas i.e. Retirement and Marriage Visas when applying the first time; 3 month deposit term is required when renewing the visas
**
Jail term for those who overstayed in Thailand for 42 days and above.

The 15 days is not a visa , thats the stamp you are given if arriving without a visa.

No, it's a bunch of "Thai lawyers and foreign business consultants" who are selling something.

So............ any recent experiences of arriving into Thailand, by flight, with UK passport on one way ticket.... I'm flying in from India....

I plan to fly in November so is it better to arrange visa in advance in India?

I really don't want to book my onward travel yet...

i flew into thailand twice (july and august) on one way tickets with uk passport. no questions asked either time, 30 day visa granted with no problems.
Only was a problem the very 1st time (in april) when quantas made a big issue out of it and insisted i had a flight out of there. from what i can gather it only seems to be a problem when u fly in from the uk. it's not the thai immigration people, its the airlines. apparently they are just covering their backs, but seems weird when the thai's really don't give a toss...
