I am trying to figure a way to get from Vang Vieng to Chiang Mai. There are several options, but the option I like the best is the direct bus from Vang Vieng to Udon Thani, and then a flight from Udon Thani to Chiang Mai.

There is a cheap flight that leaves in the evenings from Udon Thani to Chiang Mai at 6:15PM. It appears that there is a direct bus that leaves Vang Vieng at 9:30 or 10:00AM. If I take this bus, will I safely make a 6:15 plane to Chiang Mai? Or is there another mode of transportation that will get me to Udon Thani earlier so I can make this flight?

Any help is appreciated.

If that bus leaves on time at 0930 and there's no delay at the border, you'll be in Udon by 1600, so plenty of time to get to the airport as check-in closes at 1735 for that flight. So, you can have an hour delay and still make it. No quicker way unless you charter taxis both side of the border.

It's only 2.5 hours to Luang Prabang, but the direct flight on Lao Air to Chiang Mai is twice as much, and leaves at 1350.

2.5hrs from where to Luang Prabang and by what means?

If...

If it leaves at 10.00 or even 10.30 then suddenly there is very little time for further delays along the way or at the border to get there in time for last check-in.

Personally I wouldn't if I had that flight prebooked, too tight for my taste.

Are we not reading the same post? I took Vang Vieng to be OP's start point, and I know from experience it's a 2.5 hours drive. From there there's a direct flight once a day to Chiang Mai - but it isn't as cheap as Udon - Chiang Mai on Nok or BKK Airways.
