Hi everyone,

My friends and I (there are three of us), are going to Phuket on Jan 16 2008 and are a bit confused. Last time I went to Thailand in 2002, you could just rock up anywhere and after a bit of searching around, find a reasonably priced guesthouse (although I did stay on Koh Samet and Koh Chang). Now I've discovered that there are all these booking services online for guesthouses and hotels and the prices have tripled! We thought we'd book ahead just when we get to Phuket so we have a base, but as far as Krabi and Phi Phi go, do I need to do the same with guesthouses? We'd like to share a room and our budget will be 1600 THB a night combined - is it hard to find rooms that accommodate three people? I've now looked at so many guesthouses online and I'd love to know if most are online now or if there's still a fair proportion that aren't? We don't need a tv or minibar, aircon is nice but not essential, we don't mind a 15-20 minute walk to nightlife/beach etc - I'd love to hear your recommendations and advice :)

Thanks JJ, I appreciate it! Do those online reservation systems for the guesthouses work well? I can just imagine rocking up and the place being packed out, with my reservation being conveniently lost ;)

Thanks JJ.
TR, PP Hill above Long Beach has fan and aircon bungalows easily big enough for an extra double matress. Check their website on my PP page on the link JJ gave. Long Beach has easy access to town.
Last I looked, you could not book thru PP Hill's website! But maybe they have fixed this. I have another commercial booking website where you can book. These sites have worked okay on the 3 only occasions I have used them. I usually walk-in, but I travel alone on no set itinerary most trips and don't mind searching around for places when I hit an island.

On the PP newspaper article page I mentioned I stayed in August at Toh Koh Resort in a family bungalow - 2 double+ beds. Great place but not convenient to town. Can get lively at their funky cliffside bar in high season though. No website for this.

Check my Krabi info thing for Railay Cabana up past the Diamond Cave from East Railay. I think I mention that their newer bungalows can sleep 4. This place hasn't a website - travelfish.org should have a phone number if I haven't.

Sea Blue Guesthouse, in Patong Beach, has rooms with 3&4 beds 900B for 2, 300B each extra person. So the price would be 1200 for 3 of you.
They also have dorm rooms for 300B per person.

Behind the Junceylon Mall, all their rooms have TV and AirCon.

PM me if you want the contact info.
