RE # CALLIPO ,
Its very hard to take your post seriously , but about your point - QUOTE - "well the world has moved on since then and the natives have decided, most inconveniently for the likes of dave, that they are not having that kind of imperialism any more. Esepcially not, when they are not given the same kind of freedom when they want to visit the richer countries as tourists legally themselves. "
--------------------------------
Callipo if this is the case could you please explain why Thai immigration don't appear to take the onward ticket rules seriously and make little more attempt to enforce them than they did about showing your valuables in the costoms red channel . ?

As for not being granted visa free entry to some countries - those are decisions made by respective foreign governments not rthe individual visitors , its not their fault so it hardly makes sense to have tit for tat - doesn't really achieve anything does it ? .

QUOTE - "Basically check-in staff are just covering themselves in case someone gets turned back and the airline is on the hook for it which no doubt comes back to who ever checked them in. .."
----------------------------
In the case of Australian check in crew thats mostly true , but the excepttion is that sometimes the staff know the real situation that its very unlikely you will be turned back and don't make an issue of it . If they do , you still have the option of buying ticket at the airport. But anyway if they ask you about whether you have visa or return ticket , if there is time could you ask them what their policy is , ie - a question along the lines - "what do you do if someone doesn't have visa or ticket ? . Cheers.

An example of what might happen if you don't have entry clearance before you depart. In the UK it is a £2000 fine for the airline.
