My partner and I, (both UK passport holders) are planning to travel from Cambodia to Bangkok overland, through the Poipet - Aranyaprathet crossing and stay in Thailand on a 15 day exemption visa. We will then be leaving Thailand via Satun (before the 15 days is up) and travelling via ferry to Langkawi.

The problem is that we cannot book the ferry before we get to Thailand and as I understand it we have to have proof of onward travel in order to obtain the visa exemption. Does anybody know a way around this? We have hotel reservations in Malaysia for example, would that be ok?

Also I have read on some sites that it isn't even possible to obtain a visa exemption for Thailand, when entering overland from Cambodia. Does anybody know if this is true or not?

I would really appreciate any advice, especially from anybody who has done a similar journey.

Thanks

No proof of anything required to get a 15 day "visa exempt" stamp at Poipet - Aranyaprathet.

Your fine.

Onward travel is technically a requirement, but very rarely (if ever) checked by the customs people. (I have never been asked in all of my trips to Thailand) It is more often checked by the airlines as they are obligated to fly customers back if they did not properly check all the passengers documents and the passenger gets denied entry for missing documents.

You are more likely to encounter scams and shakedowns for more $$ at the border :)

You can definitely get an exemption when crossing by land from Cambodia based on what you described.

No you don't. The border officials tried this on briefly a few years ago but it didn't last.

Again not true, as long as you're on the list of preferred countries (see my thai visa link below) no problem getting a 15-day visa exempt stamp at the border without proof of anything.
