Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone could tell us what kind of condition the Thai islands affected by the Tsunami are in???

We are going to spend some time on a Thai island at the end of August, but are unsure whether to go to one in Gulf of Thailand or on the west cost of Thailand??

Cheers for any advice...

I would think that if youre going to the west coast you should get ready to roll up your sleeves and help,on the eastern side nothing has changed ,except even more backpackers ourists

There will be more rain on the west coast of Thailand than the east in August. The tsunami is now ancient history as far as the Thai islands are concerned (re rubbish/debris), although it'll still be some time before Phi Phi and Khao Lak are back up to their previous tourist numbers.

ancient history!hardly ,when theres still 100s of bodies in ice waiting for i.d.and a month ago remains were being picked out of the mangroves

Well, OK, I concede that there are still a number of bodies unaccounted for and unidentified. I just meant if you are a tourist new to the region and don't have relatives/friends involved in the tragedy you will not notice much untoward - other than at Phi Phi and Khao Lak. The rest of the region has been tidied up.

Well answered farflung. It is good to finally see someone on here not go into defensive mode when something they had posted is challenged. Should be a lot more of this and then we would not have al of those posts which just abuse each other instead of just talking about travel.

Having just come from Phi Phi, I would say that it's clear the tsunami has had a major impact on the island. That being said, it shouldn't stop you from going: it has virtually all the amenities from before (except it is far easier - and cheaper - to find accommodations - even though there are fewer than before), it is still incredibly beautiful, and they desperately need your tourist bahts...

oops !sorry,! I thought forum meant being able to express a point of view ,abuse ? hardly, dont think I said not to go there .by all means do, the locals need things to get going again.

Absolutely no abuse from you nijkerk. I just felt that "farflung" conceded your point and then explained himself better. I see a lot of people on here who do not like their posts to be challenged or queiried and bite back, however I thought "farflung" answered it quite well.

Thank-you #8. My impressions were gathered on a tour of the region two months ago. You can view some recent pictures here.
